The Science

We offer medications including injectable medication, and oral medications tailored to each patient's medical history and goals.

Liraglutide

A medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. It works by mimicking the effects of a natural hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which helps control blood sugar levels and appetite.

How it works:

  • Stimulating insulin release: When blood sugar levels are high, it encourages the pancreas to release more insulin.

  • Lowering glucagon secretion: It helps reduce the amount of glucagon released by the liver.

  • Slowing gastric emptying: It slows down how quickly food leaves the stomach, which helps control blood sugar levels after meals.

  • Reducing appetite: It helps reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, which can lead to weight loss.

Tirzepatide

A medication used to treat Type 2 diabetes and for weight management. Tirzepatide is a dual agonist for the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors.

How it works:

  • It mimics the actions of these hormones, which play a role in regulating blood sugar, digestion, and appetite.

  • By activating these receptors, Tirzepatide helps increase insulin secretion (particularly in response to high blood sugar), reduce glucagon release, slow down stomach emptying, and promote feelings of fullness.

  • It also can improve insulin sensitivity and help the body utilize stored fat for energy.

  • Tirzepatide has a greater affinity for GIP receptors than GLP-1 receptors.

Semaglutide

A medication that belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. GLP-1 is a natural hormone in the body that plays a role in regulating insulin secretion, glucose metabolism, and appetite.

How it works:

  • Enhances Insulin Secretion: It stimulates the pancreas to release insulin in response to high blood sugar levels, helping to lower blood sugar.

  • Slows Gastric Emptying: It slows down the rate at which food leaves the stomach, leading to a feeling of fullness for longer periods.

  • Reduces Appetite: It affects areas in the brain that regulate appetite, leading to decreased hunger and cravings.

  • Reduces Glucagon Production: It decreases the production of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels.

Contrave

A medication used for weight loss and long-term weight management in certain adults. It's typically prescribed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

How it works:

  • The first component of Contrave, naltrexone HCI, is an opioid antagonist. This means it blocks the center in the brain where opiate-like medications bind.

  • The second component, bupropion HCI, helps keep the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine slightly higher in the central nervous system.

  • Contrave is believed to work on the hypothalamus (appetite regulatory center) and dopamine reward system in the brain to regulate appetite.
